FINDS
After trying two flavors I have to admit I cannot say enough good things about Simple Creations Seasoned Beef Ribeye Steaks available at Aldi's. We've now had the chop-house seasoning and the roasted garlic and herb seasoning; and all steak cuts were under $5.00. So I could get 3 for each of us (each one is a single serve); for $15.00 in total as opposed to $15.00 for probably 1 rib eye most places. Mind you I want to get a bougie rib eye at some point from a local butcher but this girl is on a hard core budget so I have to stay focused on cheap thrills.
I've followed the instructions from Alton Brown for the most part from the episode: STEAK YOUR CLAIM. Here's the suggestions:
- Get yourself a Ribeye.
- Use a Cast Iron Pan 10 Inch - 11 Inch.
- When making steak, put oven at 500 bake. Put skillet in oven.
- Coat both sides of steak with kosher salt (I did not because they were seasoned already).
- Put pan on high heat for 5 minutes.
- Black pepper on both sides.
- Canola Oil a few drops tossed around on the plate, both sides. or Peanut of Safflower. (Use these because of high smoke points my first try I used olive oil and created a smoke machine in my house.)
- Put it in the pan, do NOT touch for 30 seconds.
- Turn over and DO NOT touch for 30 seconds.
- Move whole pan and steak into oven at 500 degrees, let sit for 2 minutes, then turn over for another 2 minutes.
- Use instant read thermometer into the side of meat to get to middle. 130 - 145 degrees for medium rare. Feel steak, should be soft still.
- Rest the meat on a plate on top of an inverted saucer, lightly cover with aluminum foil.
- Let it rest for 3 minutes.
(I substituted the cast iron for one of my oven-friendly Emeril pans until I can upgrade to the classic).
Directions:
I have had a perfect steak both times I've made these, even my picky has to be medium well ate the medium/medium rare ones I cooked up. So, even though these are budget friendly steak options, you really cannot go wrong with them.
FAIL
Nothing specific this week other than it was the first week I attempted a full shopping trip to get groceries in a mask. Up until this point I've been utilizing the amazing service provided by Instacart as I've been trying very hard to be one of the non-house leaving people during the pandemic. However, I wanted to save on the delivery fees so I ventured out. It took me FOREVER and let me tell you, a bbw in a mask taking forever to find items makes for a very unhappy woman. I was exhausted and hot (I mean it is August y'all). So, at this point I'm going back to trying to use Instacart or sending out the man for the job until fall weather comes in and a mask is more comfortable weather wise. Yeesh.
